By Doris Kobernik
For the third year in a row, Joseph Fusco of Geneva Academy has qualified to go to the State Hoop Shoot competition. Third time is a charm!! This year he came in first at the State Hoop Shoot competition for the 12-13 year old boys qualifying him to compete at the Regional competition in Vancouver on March 9th.
Roseburg Elks Lodge had three Hoop Shoot contestants qualifying for the State competition: Joseph Fusco (12-13 year old boys), Khloe Grotting of West Intermediate (10-11 year old girls) and Lillian Hollenbeck of Sunnyslope Elementary (8-9 year old girls). Khloe Grotting placed in at a respectable third place for the 10-11 year old girls and Lillian Hollenbeck came in second place for the 8-9 year girls.
Silverton Elks Lodge hosted the State Hoop Shoot completion at Silverton Middle School on February 16th. Each of the 7 districts sponsored their District’s winners to the third-round competition which determines those that will go on to the Regional Hoop Shoot competition. The Oregon districts are Metro, North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South Central, Southeast and Southwest.
Thirty-nine Hoop Shoot District finalists braved the winter weather for this intense contest to move on to the Hoop Shoot Regionals. Boys and girls, ages 8-13 competed for just 6 positions, two each, in three age groups. The Southwest District made a very respectable showing. Joseph Fusco of Roseburg took 1st place for the 12-13 year old boys in a shoot off, sinking 20 of 25 in the initial round and 4 out of 5 in the shoot-off round. Tyler Senn of Coquille Valley took 4th place for the 10-11 year old boys also in a shoot off, making 17 of 25 in the first round and 4 of 5 in the shoot off. Jayden Rossetta also of Grants Pass had a 3rd place showing making 18 or 25 shoots for the 8-9 year old boys. For the girls, Mackenzie Powers of Grants Pass placed 5th sinking 14 of 25 baskets for the 12-13 year olds. For the 10-11 year olds, Khloe Grotting of Roseburg came in at 3rd in a double shoot off, sinking 12 of 25 in the initial round, then 2 of 5 and 1 of 5 in the shoot off rounds. Lillian Hollenbeck of Roseburg shot 14 of 25 to place 2nd for the 8-9 year olds.
Roseburg Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot Director, Joel Buoy was very excited for Fusco being able to move on to Regional. This was Fusco’s third trip to state. Buoy was very impressed with the results of the competitors from the Southwest District. Buoy is also the Southwest District Hoop Shoot Director and excited for all the kids that have participated in this year’s Hoop Shoot Program.
Fusco and the five other finalists from Oregon will go on to the Regional Hoop Shoot in Vancouver, Washington. The Hoop Shoot Regional competition will be held on March 9th, with the final level of competition being the National Hoop Shoot playoff held in Chicago, Illinois on April 27th. The national winners play for the opportunity to have their name placed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
